These recent pictures from Scott Mann of the SP Daylight cars look stunning. The passenger set is on a 56 inch radius and the gap is very minimal.

3rd Rail announces Southern Pacific SP Daylight GS-2 and GS-4

Looks like Scott Mann and his team at 3rd Rail are going to produce SP GS-2 and GS-4 to match their Daylight passenger cars. I am presuming these engines will have the correct “Southern Pacific”lettering to go with the style of the to-be-released Daylight aluminum passenger cars. Can’t wait to see production drawings. ETA is unknown

Sunset Models / 3rd Rail to produce:

“SP GS-2 and SP GS-4 in Daylight Colors to match the GGD SP Daylight (passenger cars). The engines will come with ERR Cruise,Railsounds 4.0,Pittman Powered and our Quiet Drive Mechanism. And the tenders will be lettered postwar.”

Golden Gate Depot SP Daylight Passenger Brochure sneak peak!Golden Gate Depot SP Daylight Passenger Brochure sneak peak!

Here is a sneak peak from Scott Mann over at 3rd Rail/Golden Gate Depot regarding the highly anticipated SP aluminum Daylight passenger 10 car set! By the time you read this, the brochures for people who reserved should be mailed out and in your mailbox! Here is what Scott has said regarding this SP Daylight set:

1. The Aluminum is 1/2 the thickness making these cars much lighter.
2. The Interior walls and floor are made from styrene instead of brass. Lighter still.
3. The truck axles are needle point for frictionless running.
3a. The pickups are through insulated trucks, not wipers. Less Friction.
4. The lighting is LED throughout, for low power consumption.
5. The window shades will vary in length.
6. The interior seats are at a prototypical height.
7. All roof vents and antenna are included.
8. There are transverse lines on the roofs.

Enjoy!

Lionel Vision Line Union Pacific Challenger #3989Lionel Vision Line Union Pacific Challenger #3989

Did OgaugeForums.com call Lionel on one of their next Vision Line engines or what?! We mentioned several months ago we speculated one of the Vision Line engines will be a Challenger and when the catalog was unveiled, there are 5 Challengers available for pre-order!

Although I am not a big fan of the “elephant ears”smoke deflectors,Lionel made them removable for their models which is a big plus in my book. I am personally going to order the U.P. #3989 because I want to run the engine true to it’s prototype without having to remove any smoke deflectors. I did some searching on the web and found a picture of the original U.P. #3989 Challenger to confirm that it originally did not come with any smoke deflectors. I am glad Lionel is releasing this specific version. I will probably get the #3967 which unfortunately does come with the smoke deflectors but I will mainly use it to double head these two monster engines! Ogaugeforums predicts Lionel will follow through with some auxiliary water tenders in the 2010 Volume 2 to be release sometime in August. Lionel has just made this one of the most awesome catalogs to date!

What are the 4 Vision Line engines in the 2010 Signature Catalog?

Will Lionel and CEO Jerry Calabrese follow through with their promise in delivering 2 steam and 2 diesel Vision Line engines in this year’s 2010 Signature Catalog? And what are the two Vision Line steam and diesel engines?

For steam, the one engine that keeps coming up as a popular and immensely profitable model is the UP Challenger. Even though the Challenger may not be as obscure as the 2-10-10-2 or CC2,it’s release is completely overdue (almost 10 years). For one thing,it has not been released with Legacy technology. The second thing is that Lionel enjoyed a huge sell out with the Big Boy in Legacy re-release. A Vision Line Challenger is guaranteed sales success Lionel. And if they offered this engine in multiple road numbers,I will be the first to order all of them! Would it be a surprised to you if I told you I ordered all 4 road numbers for the Legacy Big Boys?

As for the second steamer,I cannot even guess as to what it could be. I don’t think it will be the 700E Hudson that although shadowy, clearly graces the front cover of the 2010 catalog. I think the 700E will be a Conventional Classics (CC) model. This again is purely speculation on my part and I might eat my words because the detailing based on the dark pictures is pretty impressive for a CC engine. On the Vision diesel side my wish list would be a UP DD40AX or a high speed bullet train? Again, those are my speculations. The anticipation is high like betting on the winning team the day before the Super Bowl. I hope Lionel continues to break new ground with this catalog as well as give us a good excuse to spend our hard earned money especially in terrible economic times like this. Less than 1 day away from the 2010 catalog!!!

Lionel 2010 Volume 1 catalog count down clock has begun!Lionel 2010 Volume 1 catalog count down clock has begun!

Lionel has official posted a countdown clock for their 2010 Volume 1 Signature and Ready-to-Run catalog! It is not the normal 7 day countdown but rather just under 3 days which means some exciting reading material for this coming weekend! Many on the forums have made out the darkened locomotive on the cover to be a Hudson and a very detailed one at that. I will post more information as it becomes available. In the meantime, you can track the countdown clock at Lionel 2010 Signature Catalog Countdown
